Where It All Began (2005–2010)
It started with a vision—and a lot of public meetings.
During the Virginia Key Master Plan process, mountain bikers showed up with an idea: what if the North Point of the island became a home for family-friendly, community-built trails? Over five years of city planning meetings, a few passionate riders worked side by side with residents and City of Miami staff to bring their dream to the table.
What Is Virginia Key?
Virginia Key is a 1,000-acre barrier island in Biscayne Bay, nestled between downtown Miami and Key Biscayne. With its coastal mangroves, stunning water views, and rich ecological value, it’s one of Miami’s most unique natural spaces—accessible via the Rickenbacker Causeway.
A Vision Through the Virginia Key Master Plan (Adopted July 2010)
On July 22, 2010, the City of Miami adopted the Virginia Key Master Plan—a long-term vision to preserve and enhance public open space, improve waterfront access, and protect the island’s natural resources. It set the stage for what would become a remarkable community collaboration in the years to follow.
The Pitch That Changed Everything
A small group of mountain bikers made a bold promise:
They would design, build, and maintain a new trail system—with no cost to the city. The trails would be funded, staffed, and supported by the same community that would ride them.
It was enough to convince the City to give the project a shot. On a sunny day that still lives in club lore, Frenchy—the head trail builder—was handed the keys to the North Point gate.
Breaking Ground
Frenchy arrived with tools, vision, and a proven track record. Having previously built over 15 miles of trail at Oleta River State Park, he wasted no time transforming the land.
What followed was the start of something special: a trail network designed for all skill levels, fully immersed in nature, with a commitment to safety, sustainability, and fun.
Today and Beyond
Virginia Key Bicycle Club is still building—both trails and community.
From kids learning to ride to seasoned trailbuilders donating their weekends, our story continues through every volunteer, every donor, and every turn of the shovel. We’re grateful for the support, and for the chance to protect something rare: a beautiful, wild space to ride and connect, right in the heart of Miami.
