Now that the hussle and bussle of the holiday’s are over its time to get back to hitting the dirt. VKey volunteers worked out on the trails many times throughout the holidays. While the core of the physical ground pounding work is done on Sunday mornings, the VKBC is constantly working day in and out on all the planning it takes to keep the trails at their best.
This past week board members of the VKBC met with a designer for the City of Miami to be shown future plans for bathroom and vendor facilities relatively near our trailhead. We were given drawings on the city’s current working plans for an area just across form the old Jimbo’s site. If all goes according to plan the city would build bathrooms, water fountains, and a vendor area for bike and kayak rentals. In the interest of mountain bikers the VKBC suggested a bike wash area, bike stands, outdoor shower, and more.
Below are renderings VKBC has put together from the drawings provided by the City of Miami.
These renderings are just that, no guarantee on what the finished product will be, think of them as conceptual drawings on a best case scenario. Components that were suggested by the VKBC are also included in these conceptual renderings to give everybody an idea of whats possible. VKBC hopes to stay in contact with the city and work together on making this facility work for as many people who enjoy the park as possible.
The setup you see is semi-temporary in case of flood and other issue’s. The bathroom and vendor structures are actually prefab trailers which will look permanent if done correctly. Included would be a gravel parking lot and the completion of the berm that was started a while back and unfinished to separate the park from the sewage plant. If everything goes well we will hopefully get a larger, more permanent facility a few years down the road.
When completed this will hopefully improve the parks experience for everyone who enjoy’s the trails and general area. Plans are to start construction by the beginning of summer. We are still working on many of the details with the city, and we will let you guys know any information as soon as we are given more details.
