First and foremost we would like to welcome all of the new members, 31 to be exact, that signed up at our Anniversary party this past Sunday. We are now 111 members strong and growing. A confirmation email was sent out to everyone if you did not receive it please contact us through our email: VirginiaKeyBicycleClub@gmail.com.
At the anniversary party the final trail names were revealed to everyone with the installation of signs handmade and designed by Elito Scultures assisted by your VKBC trail builders. The sign building process which at first was esimated to just take a couple of work nights, took nearly 6 months of long nights once or twice a week. I’m guessing most of you will quickly pick up the theme the club has decided for the parks trail names. If you take the time to stop and look around each sign you may notice an easter egg that gives a bit more detail on the name of each trail and its short “nameless” history during its first year in service…
Perhaps the biggest draw was the new trail that was opened up: War Pigs. Another labor of love that we couldn’t stop adding to and attempting to make better with each build day. This trail is about 1/3 of a mile but it is a roller coaster of a trail. Fast and technical, it has sections that you can bomb and sections where precise handling will reward you with not falling. Pretty much the reaction that everyone had was the same, SPEECHLESS. But with a massive grin!
We have also started to sell VKBC Dri-Fit shirts, these are on sale for $20.00 and all proceeds go back to the trail fund for us to continue to build sweet trails. Dri-fit is a wicking material that feels a bit like a jersey and is lightweight and airy, perfect for our hot South Florida summers. These initially went on sale for the first time at the anniversary celebration and we were thrilled at how well they sold! We pretty much sold out and are scrambling to reorder more and the next batch will have a better selection of sizes including XXL, XS, and possibly womens fit. Stay tuned to the blog and facebook page for more information as to when you can purchase them.
Last but definitely not least, probably the most important part of the day. The amazing outpouring of support for our dear friend, fellow MTBer, and trail builder Falco Clark.
Falco recently had a devastating work accident where he lost both his legs and he is currently still in the ICU at Jackson Memorial. It took 21 pints of blood to save his life the day he arrived at the Jackson Trauma Center and he has received a total of 30+ pints. Through the help of great friends and family we were able to hold a blood drive and fund raising raffle for Falco at the anniversary celebration. Both were a HUGE success with the blood bank receiving 29 pints of blood which is 4-5 times what they would receive on a good day at one of their normal donation locations. Also with the help of Elito Sculptures, CrankLife and VKBC we were able to collect $347 in the raffle to help Falco’s family during their incredible time of need.
Thank you all for your support of Falco and the park, you can enjoy photo’s from the weekend here:
